Description
Perlite, noticeable as the small white bits in your potting soil, is a volcanic glass that is used in commercial and horticultural industries. Perlite is different to other minerals as it can expand up to 13 times its original size when heat is applied, which results in a lightweight material. Perlite has a neutral PH level and reduces temperature fluctuations in soil mixes.
Perlite does retain water but never gets soggy and when added to a potting mix, perlite helps with drainage whilst maintaining the moisture content in the root zone more than other types of minerals.
Perlite is also superb as a medium to grow cuttings.
